Pervez Musharraf is a traitor: Sharif

The spell of bad news does not seem to end for Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. First, he had to grudgingly accept his sworn enemy Nawaz Sharif's triumphant return to Pakistan politics. Now, a former ISI general, who worked under Musharraf as army chief has revealed that Sharif was kept in the dark about the Kargil adventure, further weakening Musharraf's position.

''When you engage in such kind of war, if you are involved in such kind of operation, you have to bring chief executive on board. Nawaz Sharif should have been briefed about every step, a comprehensive briefing and not the 10-15 minute briefing. We could have gone on a full-scale war. Who could have stopped India? said Lt Gen (retd) J G Kiyani, ISI officer.

This revelation that Nawaz Sharif wasn't kept in the loop on Kargil could not have come at a worse time for Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

It has given Sharif another reason to demand tough action against Musharraf.

''Musharraf should be put on trial for whatever he has done in the last nine years especially for what he did on October 12, 1999 and or on November 3, 2007. There should be a trial for treason and disloyalty towards the nation,'' said Nawaz Sharif, former PM, Pakistan.

V P Malik who was India's army chief during the Kargil incursion says the revelations will spell more trouble for Musharraf.

Now, this statement at this time has got serious implications firstly for Pervez Musharraf, that now he will be under pressure and he could be impeached if it gathers momentum, or some action could be taken against him.

So, it will probably expedite his moving out from the chair he is occupying.

Whether that happens or not will depend on the ever-changing internal politics of Pakistan.
But then, the former commando is known to have come out unscathed from even worse situations.
