The troubled life and times of Rahul Mahajan
New Delhi: His life is the kind of spectacle that television thrives on. One reason perhaps is that Rahul Mahajan understands television very well.
Not so long ago, when he was still an unknown entity, Rahul Mahajan was a television producer for Doordarshan but the spotlight turned on him, in May 2006 when he lost his father to an alleged fratricide and even before that faded in public memory, came another shocker.

1984 Sikh carnage was wrong: Rahul
Amritsar, November 18 Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi condemned the anti-Sikh violence in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s assassination, saying “whatever happened was wrong”.
“The 1984 riots were wrong. I strongly condemn the carnage,” Rahul said at a news conference in response to a question on Operation Bluestar and the riots. “There is no truth that there is hatred among Sikhs against the Congress party.

FM calls for price cuts, CEOs divided
NEW DELHI: Finance minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday called on sectors like housing, automobiles, hotels and airlines to cut prices to boost demand
and beat the slowdown.
The auto sector ruled this out as unrealistic in the current situation, while airlines — looking for a lifeline from the government — seemed more receptive to the suggestion. Real estate companies, however, remained noncommittal.

A lowdown on some sectors and companies which are on a hiring spree (TOI) TOI, however, has decided to be contrarian. SAMMA: MAKE AN EFFORT
R N Rao
Lee Strasberg, a prominent acting teacher in America said "Make an Effort". I hope that is what it took for the Indians that organized the "South Asians in Media, Marketing & Entertainment" (SAMMA) Summit 2008. They brought in a big name like Peter Liguori, CEO of Fox.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Ardesar
With the Parliamentary vote of confidence behind it, India still has two more obstacles to overcome, before it can achieve energy growth through nuclear power. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meet on August 1st, to be followed by approval from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). India is canvassing members of both organizations to assure approval is obtained.

THE ISRAEL-IRAN CONFLICT

Ardesar

It seems every week brings another piece of news which forebodes an Israel-Iran conflict in the near future. First, Israel conducted a military exercise, then Iran set off several missiles, then Israel conducted air force exercises in Iraq. The writing is on the wall - Israel will attack and it will happen before the end of 2008. Such a move would have to be sanctioned by the United States and what better time than under the auspices of a cowboy administration? Israel’s well funded military which has struck with immunity in the past - remember Syria and Iraq - will have the advantage when it strikes Iran, but will the goal be achieved? Will Israel ever be able to say “mission accomplished’.

TOWARDS MORE PEACE IN ASIA
Joseph Aranha
Throughout many countries in Asia there are moves by various, and new governments towards peace. People have voted out governments whose focus was confrontation with their neighbors as in Taiwan. The Chinese have kind of settled down due to the catastrophic earthquake that hit China in the recent past - the largest in 58 years, which showed them that power does not come out of the barrel of a gun. In Malaysia more Tamil representatives were elected to office and in South Korea a new president was elected who doesn’t seem to be confrontational.

Confucius on Peace and Tolerance
John Kung
The influence Confucius had on peoples’ lives and behavior was and is as life changing as any religion would have. Yet, Confucianism is not a religion in the usual sense. It does not possess a priesthood, nor does it have any creed, its scripture is not considered a “revelation.” You do not have to be baptized or sign any membership form. Yet, 1.3 billion Chinese are affected by Confucius’ teachings. Though not attesting to the existence of a personal God, Confucianism acknowledges the supreme Heaven, or Tien (alternately translated as Heavenly Way or Heavenly Principle), that humans must answer to. Master Kung himself reveals that his conscience always tells him to follow Tien.
